First Community United Methodist Church

"A Growing Spiritual Oasis" in Medford, Massachusetts

FROM THE PASTOR - SEPTEMBER 2005

Once again, First Community has demonstrated how truly unique we are. Back when it became obvious that it was time to sell the property at 53 Otis, the Trustees could have decided to sell it for as much as we could get. Instead, they hired an independent appraiser to review the property. His opinion was that the property is worth $384,000. As a result, the Trustees voted to offer it at that price first to members of our church, and, if no one from our church was interested, then offer it to the folks who run the shelter at the intersection of Park and Central.

In July, our Finance Committee received a letter from Quincy Community UMC seeking assistance with the expenses related to Susan and my move from Marblehead to Quincy (where Susan now serves). The Finance Committee felt that, since half the stuff that was moved is mine, and, since we had never paid anything for my “move” here (When I was first appointed, we were already living in Winthrop. Marblehead never asked for any financial assistance for the move), that it was only fair that we pay half the cost of the move.

Both of these events demonstrate First Community’s commitment to do the right thing. Instead of being selfish and greedy, the leadership of your church made a conscious decision to live out their faith. It may not seem like much, but believe me, after serving churches for twenty five years, it is rare. It is truly a blessing to be the pastor of this church. Thank you for the privilege.
