From the Pastor – September 2008
In October of 2006, our church participated in the Natural Church Development Survey. The survey revealed that “Passionate Spirituality” was our “Minimum factor” (the growth area in which we needed the most improvement). After working with our “Natural Church Development coach,” we took several steps in addressing this “factor.”
The result has been, I believe, some significant progress in personal and corporate spirituality. Several people have commented that there seems to be a new “spirit” in our church. Could it be the power of the Holy Spirit? I’d like to think so.
The time has come for us to again take the survey to see what improvements we’ve made, as well as what our new “minimum factor” will be. On September 14, we will take the survey as our “sermon” for the day.
Between completing the survey, receiving the results, and working with our coach, we will continue to emphasize “Passionate Spirituality.” On page 3, you will find a new midweek study on Wesley’s General Rules. Our adult Sunday School class will continue to read through the Bible utilizing “Transformation Journal.”
Once we have the results of our survey, we will be looking for people willing to work with our coach on our Church Council/Health Team.
Natural Church Development (NCD) highlights eight qualities essential to healthy churches. They are: “Empowering Leadership,” “Gift-Oriented Ministry,” “Passionate Spirituality,” “Functional Structures,” “Inspiring Worship Service,” “Holistic Small Groups,” “Need Oriented Evangelism,” and “Loving Relationships.” Churches participate by completing a survey, the results of which are tabulated, and a “minimum factor” determined based upon the results of the survey.
We will be once again working with the Rev. Sarah Mount as our NCD coach. In July, Sarah was appointed as pastor of Wesley UMC here in Medford. Her assistance is a great example of our connectionalism.
