"A Growing Spiritual Oasis" in Medford, Massachusetts

FROM THE PASTOR - NOVEMBER 2005

Leaves have finally changed their color. Now the mulching and bagging begins. Our gardens are winding down for the season, and there are some great deals to be had on locally grown squash, pumpkins, apples and so on. It is no wonder that we set this time aside to give thanks. In addition to its beauty, fall is a time of abundance. That abundance is a reminder of the goodness of God.

In ancient times, portions of crops were brought into the sanctuary and given as an expression of gratitude. Every Sunday, when our tithes and offerings are placed on the altar, that ancient tradition is remembered. We no longer bring a bushel of corn or a chicken to the altar. Instead, we bring money. We have moved from a world of bartering to a world of cash exchange. But the idea is still there. Giving is a way of saying “thanks.”

For the past month, some of us have gathered on Tuesday night for a brief program entitled, “your family and money.” From the video presentations, we have been reminded that the money we have is really a trust; something we are given to be used wisely. Part of using money wisely is returning a portion of it to the God who has given us so much.

It is my hope and prayer that your Thanksgiving will be filled with both thanks and giving.
